Welcome Ontario Off-Road Women!!
Meet Jan Larocque - Ontario Off-Road Women Founder
I grew up in a small town called Bowmanville, Ontario. I was very lucky to have the opportunity to have access to a 100 acre property where my parents introduced me to ATV riding. When spending time with my father, our weekend adventures usually consisted of going off-roading in the truck with my uncles and cousins to different locations. As I grew up I found myself becoming more and more interested in the off-road community.
In 2017 I decided to start a new adventure and bought my first dirt bike - a 2004 Honda CRF 230. Going from four wheels to two wheels was definitely a challenge for me as I did not have very good balance to begin with, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me from riding. The more I rode, the easier and better things became. I struggled to find other ladies in the dirt bike community through riding, and felt that it was time to start something different.
Samantha Molica, Megan Tamara and I came up with the idea of starting a ladies only Facebook group which would be called Ontario Off-Road Women. Started in February 2018, the group has since grown to 262 members. This group was created to be an inclusive and non-judgemental space for ladies in Ontario who enjoy the passion of off-roading. Our group is also a place for ladies to make new friends, ask questions, and share pictures of their rides.
In 2018 , Ontario Off-Road Women held one event which was a women’s only dirt bike day held at Trail Tours located in Pontypool, Ontario. This facility is in an 11,000 acre property called the Ganaraska Forest. Trail Tours is a dirt bike and ATV school which offers trails appropriate for beginner to Intermediate riders. The dirt bike day brought eight women of all skill levels together for a great fun filled day of riding.
We have great plans for 2019 including ladies only rides, co-ed rides in addition to dirt bike and ATV days. Ladies only rides will be held at a variety of locations including the Ganaraska forest. All events will be posted on our website and Facebook pages.
Ontario Off-Road Women will also be participating in the Spring Motorcycle Show being held Saturday April 6 and Sunday April 7 at the Toronto International Centre.
